Midtronics Demonstrates Live On-Board Battery Monitoring and Diagnostics System

Willowbrook, IL. – March 28, 2001: The SAE 2001 World Congress saw the live “in-vehicle” debut of an advanced battery condition monitoring and management system from Midtronics. The vehicle displayed on-board measurements of battery condition with real-time true state-of-charge and state-of-health calculations under various electric loads and applications.

The new systems, named inGENTM and onGUARDTM, provided both visual LED outputs as well as continuous serial communication to a Palm Pilot and PC and are configurable for any communication protocol. The measurements were taken from 12-volt lead-acid batteries and are scalable for 24-volt, 42-volt, and HEV/EV battery systems and alternative chemistries, as well as integration with emerging ISG and SA technologies.

inGEN and onGUARD will enable continuous, real-time analysis of the battery’s condition while in use. The systems provide measurements that can be used to optimize charging elements and improve fuel-efficiency, extend battery life and increase reliability. inGEN and onGUARD are based around Midtronics’ conductance technology, which has been adopted and utilized by all major vehicle OEMs for battery testing and charging solutions.
